Every day when Sammy came to work, he passed a vendor on the street corner in front of his office building. For the first several weeks, Sammy bought a bagel with light cream cheese and a large black coffee and went on his way. After a while, Sammy struck up conversations with the vendor. His name was Ivan. He’d emigrated from Russia and recently gotten his permanent resident alien status—his green card.
One particularly hot August morning, Uncle Joe came into the office with Sammy, as much to take a trip to the other side of town as anything else. So Sammy introduced his Uncle Joe to Ivan, and as always when he met someone for the first time, Joe acted like he and Ivan had been friends for years.
