I believe my parents’ decision to become foster parents was my first desire to know more about the world outside of our small industrial town in upstate New York. My parents had tried to have a fourth child for several years and when my mom did become pregnant, only to deliver a premature and stillbirth baby, she was devastated. I’m not sure how my parents came to the decision to foster newborns, but I am sure it was connected to losing that baby.
