In the previous three Chapters, I demonstrated the importance of symbolic numbers in ancient Greek texts. I also concluded that, in Chapter 12 of St. Matthew’s Gospel, there was a clear textual distinction between the name Iwna (i.e. “Jonah” in “the sign of the prophet Jonah”) and the name Iωνας (i.e. “Jonas” in “Jonas in the belly of the whale”). This distinction is of immense importance. The addition of the “ς” in the original Greek has the effect of adding 200 to the gematrian – or symbolic – value of the name.
