5.2. Measurement and Rewards

What counts is what you count. What gets rewarded gets done. Both notions have been part of the corporate discussion for years. Yet, many business leaders suffer the drag caused by measurement and reward systems that are grossly out of alignment with what's needed to win. They simply communicate the wrong messages—messages that are inconsistent with driving people and what they do in the right direction.

When people don't seem to be doing what's needed to win, you might start your culprit search by first looking at how effectively measurement is being used in the goal-setting process.
