Daniel: So that’s how you define a defect? A blood sugar level requiring
more than the typical amount of insulin?
Tracy: Yes.
Daniel: And you win by removing the special causes of unaccept-
able variation?
Tracy: I win that way, and I also win by reducing the range of rou-
tine variation.
Daniel: How do you do that?
Tracy: Structural changes can cause the range to shrink or expand.
These could be changes within my control or not. For
instance, if I’m working in the home office, I can exercise
5days a week. If this becomes a regular habit, then the rou-
tine variation in my blood sugar will be reduced. Which office
