A lidar is a device for measuring distance using a pulsed laser. The name is an acronym for “light detection and ranging.” An optical receiver in the lidar looks for the laser pulse reflected from objects in the laser beam. By relating the time delay between the transmission and reception of the pulse to the speed of light, distance can be measured. The laser light from lidars is typically infrared and so is not visible to the human eye.
