Hybrids Breed Resilience

Science has discovered that hybrids often play a vital role in fortifying species, sometimes doing so at astonishing speed in response to environmental threats. The classic example is the cichlid fish found in East Africa’s great lakes, which hybridized at astonishing rates in response to climate change.1 Hybrids can adapt quickly, with genetic micro-changes driving resilience in response to danger or profound change. As we have seen in previous chapters, resilient businesses imitate nature. Disruptive technology and the global pandemic have hastened the evolution of hybrids—including hybrid talent models.
