In the natural world, evolution is the sum of changes on vastly different scales. Microevolution happens on a small scale within a single population, while macroevolution happens on a mega scale, transcending the boundaries of a single species. When it comes to cadence, microevolution is observed at short timescales, macroevolution over eons. Microevolution is driven by multiple mechanisms, including natural selection and mutation, all producing nature’s countless variations. Macroevolution is defined as evolution above the species level, effectively microevolution plus 3.8 billion years.
