In high school, I kept a super-lame journal. It was hot pink on the outside and had a lock to keep it secret that had long ago broken apart. I wrote about drama with boys, drama with friends, drama with teachers. The usual high school stuff. I was leafing through it years later when I came to a page where my younger sister Alexis had apparently found it and taken it over. This is where it got much juicier. Alexis was only eight years old, but wrote compelling truths about her young life.

Some noteworthy entries:

  • September 12, 1995: I found this journal in Erin’s desk. I don’t think she knows I have it. Oh well.
  • November 15, 1995: My mom got my brother and I matching bed covers (they are striped). Mine is red and Stevo has blue ones. They’re ugly. I wish I didn’t have to share a room with him.
  • P.S. Today is Stevo’s b-day. I got him some incense (is that the right spelling?) even though I hate the smell of it. I hope he gets me something for my birthday.
  • November 17, 1995: Today is my b-day! Yay! Today I turned 8! That’s my lucky number. Stevo gave me a hug for a gift so I think I am going to take back my gift until he gets me one (I know I am mean!). Erin didn’t get me anything but she doesn’t have to because I didn’t get her anything for her b-day.
