While talent management is not the same as replacement plan-
ning, it just makes sense to start with the most basic need of most
organizations—that is, continuity planning in case of the sudden
short-term or long-term loss of a key person (like yourself!). Your
first responsibility as a manager is to identify and train someone to
back you up in case you are out because of vacation, illness, death,
disability, or a sudden wonderful event (like winning the lottery to
the tune of a cool $100 million after taxes.).
