of workers, such as new hires, may be cost-effectively managed by
the HR department by designing and delivering the training as a
service to managers.
At the same time, workers may be trained on how to be better
learners. They should be told, perhaps as early as new hire orienta-
tion, that they are expected to take the initiative in learning what
they need to be productive on the job. Workers must be told that
they are not to be passive learners who sit around and wait for some-
one to tell them what to do. Rather, they should take the initiative
to ask questions, watch more experienced performers do their jobs,
and try to imitate people identified as good role models.
