Many organizations include diversity goals in their talent pro-
grams—that is, they seek to increase the representation of protected
class workers (such as women, minorities, and others) and alterna-
tive workers (such as retirees, consultants, and contingent workers)
in their talent base. While that may be a goal at the strategic level,
what you, as a manager, do on a daily basis affects the long-term
outcomes of that strategy.
And diversity, as a topic, is growing more important. In the
