ANALYZE THE OCCASION

Often overlooked, the occasion of the speech itself provides the speaker with direction and insight into the speech. Quite simply one might ask, “Why am I being asked to speak?” It could be an annual retraining session, an after dinner speech at a social meeting, a retirement luncheon, a stockholders meeting, induction of new club members or a thousand other reasons. Whatever those reasons, the speaker needs to be aware of the timing, the location and the immediate events surrounding the speech.
