Accepting Differences

As long as we are all different, there will not be one standard of behavior that will be identical. What is appropriate for one person or one culture will not be appropriate for another. Our values, beliefs, and customs will highlight significant differences in communication that signal whether someone is perceived as being respected or not. The concept of “independence,” for example, is emphasized in American culture, so people grow up with the value and belief that mobility is OK. Friendships may be fleeting and possibly short term.
