Chapter 11. Final Thoughts

Scotland's greatest poet, Robert Burns, was inspired to write these words on a freezing morning in 1785: "Still, thou art blest, compar'd wi' me! / The present only toucheth thee: / But Och! I backward cast my e'e / On prospects drear! / An' forward, tho' I canna see, /I guess an'fear!" His plough had just turned over the nest of a tiny mouse, and sent it running into the bitter, cold wind. At that moment he realized that even a mouse in dire circumstances was more blessed than him. The mouse was free and living only in the moment, whereas Burns felt trapped in despair because his thoughts were always focused on the past or the future.

Many people are first drawn to practise Mindfulness by a simple thought—"I can't continue on with things the way they are now." This is certainly an apt description for the state of our economy. Lack of awareness, both internal and external, contributed to recent financial crises. In order to find our way back and regain solid financial footing, we must all endeavour to become more conscious.

While we encourage you to use all of the techniques in this book, you should note that even small changes will have a big impact. Just as a financial plan demonstrates the large impact a small change can have on your finances, simply becoming more aware of yourself and what's going on around you will have a large impact on your life.
