Sift, Edit, and Refine
Photographers are often the worst editors of their own work. Editing in the form of selecting images is an art that can make or break your portfolio, website, book, or image feed. A sequence of images is only as strong as its weakest link. Learn to cull the coherent images from the stray sketches and random observations. Stay focused on the theme you are striving to express and ruthlessly remove those images that do not fit. When editing, I always keep in mind writer William Faulkner’s advice to “kill your darlings,” referring to those elements of the story that you love but do not contribute to the whole.
