1 INTRODUCTION

Taiwan has enjoyed enormous success in its ongoing economic development for over fifty years, and as a result, the island has gained international recognition for this ‘economic miracle’. Furthermore, due largely to the extraordinary transformation of Taiwan over a period of less than two decades, from an authoritarian state to an open and democratic society, this ‘economic miracle’ has subsequently been developed into a ‘political miracle’.
