Preface

This volume is the result of a joint project by the Wharton SEI Center for Advanced Studies in Management and the INSEAD Social Innovation Centre. The original motivation for this book stemmed from several meetings of the SEI Center Board that focused on revisiting work of the early 1990s at the SEI Center on the future of the corporation. These discussions suggested interesting tensions between the established theory of the firm and emerging practice. The underlying factors giving rise to these tensions were the emergence of new communication and information technologies, new governance and regulatory institutions, and corresponding new business models, which were web-centric, not firm-centric.
