Overlay: Because of the formation process, from fossils, there is a finite and therefore limited amount of gas available underground in the world. It is nonrenewable. However, recent technology—hydraulic fracturing—has greatly expanded the amount of gas potentially available to the United States from shale formations. As a result, the United States and the world now have large potential reserves for at least several generations.
