aberration

For the purposes of this book, the term is used in relation to chromatic aberration and refers to the refraction of different wavelengths of light at slightly different angles that causes colored fringes in the photograph. These colored fringes cause a reduction in the overall image quality.

acutance

The subjective perception of sharpness related to edge contrast in an image.

AF-A

Automatic autofocus. The camera automatically chooses either AF-S (single servo) or AF-C (continuous servo).

AF-C

Continuous-servo autofocus.

AF-D

A designation on certain Nikon lenses that means they electronically translate distance information to the camera.

AF-F

Full-time autofocus.

AF-S

Single-servo autofocus; also silent wave motor focus.
