Thinking outside the box

You have probably encountered phrases such as "thinking outside the box" (or thinking outside the square). To some, this is but one of many annoying and over-used terms. But the background is a bit more interesting, so just in case you haven't seen the puzzle upon which the phrase is based, it goes something like this:
