Abstract:

“Just-in-time” purchasing is replacing “just-in-case” collection building as librarians evaluate usage statistics and adapt technology to deliver information to patrons more efficiently. Patrons are directly involved in the acquisition process by clicking on records in the catalog, or indirectly through ILL requests. Librarians can use social media to solicit information for purchases, and by working with consortia they can expand the collection beyond the library walls. Negotiation is a necessary skill for building collections, and best practices for negotiating will result in contracts that benefit libraries and vendors.
