The Pestiary

The bestiary, an illustrated compendium of beasts, was a popular form of medieval book. These illuminated manuscripts portrayed creatures of the natural world, sometimes with impressive attention to detail. Being the Middle Ages, the purpose and characteristics of the animals were usually described in a religious context, lessons in morality abounded and some bestiaries even included imaginary beasts. One of the most famous surviving examples, the Aberdeen Bestiary, features the dragon and the phoenix in its pages alongside beasts with a more legitimate claim to exist, such as the horse, deer, bat and ant.
