A mobile exhibition unit toured county shows and horticultural events to promote Rentokil’s expertise in wood preservation and insecticides. Meanwhile, Hickin further advanced his own reputation, and that of Rentokil, with the publication of two books. First, in 1952, there was an account of the biology of the British caddis fly. Then came Woodworm: Its Biology and Extermination (1954), a classic of its genre. His aim was to produce “something like a textbook for the layman” and he hit the mark by tackling his subject in impressive detail while writing in a style that was easy to understand.
