Chapter Six: Aiming High
In the mid-1980s, Rentokil was involved in a landmark project in Norway that was of immense cultural significance.
Norway is the only country in Northern Europe where medieval wooden churches survive in significant numbers. Its magnificent stave churches (stavkirke), built in the 12th and 13th centuries, are rightly seen as national treasures. The grandest of all, Urnes Stave Church, was constructed in circa 1150 and is lavishly decorated with intricate wooden carvings depicting a variety of real and mythical creatures in a style that draws on both Nordic and Celtic traditions. Indeed its historical significance and exceptional craftsmanship is so great that it features on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.
