Chapter Openers
Introduction Chapter Opener
While street shooting in Santa Barbara with my friend Bruce Heavin of lynda.com fame, I spotted this interesting light and shadow interplay on the side of an adobe building. I used a Canon 28-300mm IS lens set to 85mm with +1 exposure compensation (1/250 at f/9.5), ISO 200. Bruce had loaned me the lens for the day. I didn't really want to give it back.
Chapter 1 Opener
As I was wandering around Kennedy Space Center in Florida, I spotted this interesting shot of a rocket engine, or at least the exhaust part of one. I used a Canon XTi with a 17-40mm f/4 zoom lens set to 1/45 at f/4.5, ISO 400. I cropped the version that was used for the chapter opener to add drama. Here's the uncropped version as I shot it.
Chapter 2 Opener
Another fireworks shot during the opening ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics. I actually had the wrong lens mounted when I was caught off-guard by the sudden explosions. I just took the shot anyway, and ended up with an interesting composition that I might not have created otherwise. I had a 50mm f/1.4 Sigma lens on my Canon 5D when the fireworks erupted. The exposure was 1/250 at f/3.5 at ISO 1600.
