The essence of an innovation platform business model
Innovation platforms are platforms that serve as a technological foundation ‘upon which a larger number of firms can build further complementary innovations’.6 One very prominent and hugely successful innovation platform is Google’s smartphone operating system Android (see Figure 1.2.3). The operating system forms the basis on which external companies such as Facebook, ByteDance (TikTok) or Zoom can develop complementary applications.
