013 Classicism and Renaissance

Classicism is a recurring tendency defined by an adherence to certain qualities of Greek and Roman art. These were rediscovered during the Renaissance and continued to reappear in subsequent centuries.

Proportions. Classical artists were interested in certain mathematically derived ratios like the Golden Mean.

Clarity. Aristotle named clarity or definiteness as one of the components of beauty.

Restraint. Classical art prefers stateliness of movement and understatement of drama.

Harmony. Unity of structure was one of the ideals of Classical art. Harmonious proportions, relationships, and color are prized.
