In the 1870s, a group of French painters dubbed “Impressionists” found a new way to re-create the sensation of light. Up until then, almost all painters had created light by using tonal changes across forms. The Impressionists used small patches of brilliant color, building them into surfaces in which they alternated the color temperature to create a vivid sense of outdoor light.
