026 Decoration

Art that is intended to simply please the eye, to adorn a surface, or to act as ornamentation is generally referred to as “decorative.” Most decorative art deploys pattern, a repeated motif that forms a geometric regularity. Decoration can include the following basic pattern types:

Grid. A motif is repeated tile-fashion in horizontal, vertical, or diagonal rows.

Repeat. A motif is designed so that it can repeat, with one side fitting into the other side of its next appearance.

Stripes. Parallel lines are repeated, usually in various colors.

Meander. A single line runs continuously and repeats the same motif: for example, the Greek “key” pattern.
