030 The Emotive Object

When an artist seeks to create a powerful emotional reaction in the viewer, the enterprise is referred to as “expressionist.”

STRATEGIES

Exaggeration or distortion. The artist might elongate, twist, compress, stretch, or otherwise distort the subject.

Disturbing subject matter. This is the depiction of emotionally charged subjects, such as violence, alienation, and sexuality.

Heavy line. A heavy, wide line can carry a sense of weightiness and even brutality.

Severe angular shifts. Acute angular relationships between elements tend to bring about a sense of unease.

Strong and unnatural color. This can provoke a powerful emotional response.
