042 Intentionality

Intentionality is the idea that a work of art is an expression of an intention on the part of an artist to achieve specific results. For instance, an artist may be intending to create a work that imparts a sense of mystery, or presents an entirely satisfying experience of color harmony, or delivers a highly resolved experience of a set of forms. Whatever the intention, the artist will employ the formal means at his disposal to achieve them. Choices about composition, color, simplification, visual language, and other tools will be aligned in the service of the overall intention.
