Juxtaposition is a procedure in which one element is placed next to another, creating a new relationship.
• Subversive. Expected norms are upended by unlikely combinations of images.
• Dramatic. For example, the severed head of John the Baptist held by a delicate Salome.
• Poetic. The American artist Joseph Cornell (1903–1972), for instance, juxtaposed images to create a sense of wistful and poetic charm.
• Polemic. A political point can be made by juxtaposing one image with another.
• Positive association. This is a technique often used in advertising: for example, an athlete might be paired with a beer bottle.
Juxtaposition can also be a purely abstract strategy using shapes, colors, and textures.
