These are artworks that actually move.
• The Russian artist Naum Gabo (1890–1977) is generally credited with making the first kinetic sculpture, Standing Wave, in 1920. This consists of a single piece of metal placed vertically and made to oscillate by a mechanism in its base, creating a three-dimensional wave form.
• Alexander Calder (1898–1976) developed a new genre when he invented the mobile. Elements are hung from crossbeams that are balanced so that they move gently with surrounding air currents.
• Swiss artist Jean Tinguely (1925–1991) made sculptures designed to self-destruct. Fabricated from disused machine parts, they had deliberately short lives, suggesting a radical and nihilistic view of the role of art and indeed ...
