Many artists engage in planning and developmental stages.
Although approaches can be infinitely various, a number of methods have proved fruitful over the centuries. Ideas can be worked up in rough sketches, drawings, finished drawings, and even full-scale rough versions of the more finished work to come. Problems that can be solved in these stages include the overall conception of the work, the scale and placement of elements, and the tonal and color distribution.
