075 Rhythm

Usually a musical concept, rhythm has strong visual counterparts. A sense of dynamic movement working rhythmically across a surface can be compelling on its own or can provide an underpinning for a more complex work. In Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, for example, the linear organization proceeds in a rhythmic fashion from top to bottom, carrying the viewer’s eye downward toward hell.

STRATEGIES

Conformation. A linear rhythmic movement is established and elements within the work are drawn or sculpted to conform to it.

Compositional. Elements are placed so that they set up a sense of rhythm throughout the work.
