Video art is a genre that came into being in the late 1960s, when consumer portable video cameras were first manufactured. The form is distinguished from film and television by its lack of adherence to traditional expectations of entertainment and diversion.

STRATEGIES

Real time. Video makes long takes possible. The idea of showing something in real time, however tedious, promises the possibility of viewing an unedited world.

Multiple display. By 1969, new technology allowed for the screening of coordinated videos on multiple screens, a technique that is now commonplace.

Abstract. Electronic synthesizers and digital graphic software allow for the creation of video images without the use of a camera.
