Electric and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles and Smart Grids

Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) need to be connected to the utility grid on a regular basis for charging their batteries.

An upcoming area of considerable interest is vehicle-to-grid capability where the stored energy in a parked EV or PHEV is judiciously utilized as a load averaging system. In such systems, EVs and PHEVs are used as miniature power stations to supply real power back to the grid during high demand periods and recharge their batteries during low-demand periods.
