How to Work with Blacks, Whites, and Midtones
If you want your images to look their best, most need to fully use the range of tonalities and colors that a display or print is capable of rendering. All display media, from computer monitors to iPad screens to paper prints, look best with a full range of tonality from black to white. If you are not using this full range, the display or print will look gray, sometimes even like you shot with a gray filter that dulled the image. I do have to qualify this lest you think this is an arbitrary rule. Some scenes, and the best example is a foggy landscape, will not have a full range of tonality from black to white, and should never be processed for that. But most images need this.
