The Second Key—Being a District and System Player

The boundary between the school and the outside is becoming more permeable. This has opened up an exciting new (and daunting) world for principals. Remember that the main goal is to use all resources, including those outside the school, to build the professional capital of teachers so that student learning can flourish. In so doing, principals need to become “system players”—school leaders who contribute to and benefit from the increased performance of other schools in the district and of the system as a whole. This new engagement of principals in the betterment of the system is in its early stages, so some aspects of it are not yet well developed.
