A prop is a physical object that an actor uses during a performance.
That simple statement raises a whole bunch of complex questions. Who is an actor? What is a performance? By a prop, do you mean any kind of object? Scholars love to play with all the gray areas of what a prop is or isn't, or speculate about when a real object turns into a prop, but we don't have to deal with these theoretical questions.
