Blow Smoke!

After all, it’s what we do anyway.

A long time ago, I was assigned to photograph famed novelist Joyce Carol Oates—with a Ferrari. The magazine’s title was “Quality,” and it featured stories of luxe dispatches from the world of the unaffordable. They assigned Oates, a brilliant writer with an inclination to observe the darker aspects of existence, to drive the Ferrari and write up the experience. Which she did, though the safety driver with her, as I recall, mentioned her top speed clocked in around 50 or 60 mph. Okay, cool.

I needed to find a place to shoot this, and I settled on an old garage facility out in Jersey, attempting to contrast the garage, which was the kind of place you most likely might bring a midrange Chevy or Honda ...
