Penetration is the perceptive understanding of complex matters (Oxford English Dictionary). A penetrating state of mind is focused on getting to the truth in a way that includes differing perspectives. In complex and uncertain environments there are often conflicting opinions about the nature of a problem or how to solve it. Listening to each view and becoming an expert at recognizing and questioning assumptions reduces conflict by making people feel heard. When you find yourself in disagreement, rather than shut down, ask more questions about what the other party is saying and their intentions. Remember that asking people for their advice and using it are high forms of recognition.
