CHAPTER 13Time Design:Time-Stretching

 

 

The one thing every remixer will have to deal with on a regular basis is timestretching. This is the process of changing the length of an audio file. Although the process has become known as time-stretching it does, of course, include timecompression as well. If you have a song to remix that is at 110 bpm and you want to do your remix at 140 bpm you have to somehow make the audio files you use from the original song the same tempo as you need for the remix. And while this may sound superficially simple, the mechanics of it are far from simple.

Changing the length of an audio file is easy. If you imagine playing an LP on a record deck (remember those?) and then changing the speed from 33 rpm to 45 rpm ...
