CHAPTER 17 Mixing: EQ and Dynamic Effects
BASIC DESCRIPTION
The combination of EQ and dynamics control is, with the exception of the actual sound source itself, by far the greatest contributing factor to the sound of a final mixdown. So much so, in fact, that a traditional hardware-based studio may have tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of dollars worth of outboard EQs and compressors. Some of the more coveted vintage EQs and compressors can fetch astronomical amounts on the rare occasions that they come up for sale, and a great deal of time and money has been spent researching and recreating these hardware units in a digital plug-in format.
