WHAT IS MASTERING?
Many years ago the mastering process was necessary when recordings weretransferred from master tapes to the vinyl records the consumer purchased.Because there were large differences in the frequency response and characteristicsbetween the two media, the process wasn’t as simple as taking the tapemaster and making a vinyl record from it. Changes to the EQ of the recordingswere necessary and additional dynamics control were often applied because ofthe physical limitations of “cutting” a record to vinyl. These same processes are required, at least to some extent, with preparing files for CD or digital download, and the process of mastering has remained an integral part of the overall music creation process. ...
