Conceptualizing inequalities and misrecognitions

‘Barriers’ is a prominent concept in both WP policy texts and in literature on WP (e.g. Thomas, 2005; Gorard et al., 2007). The concept is helpful in exposing some of the difficulties and challenges that students from traditionally under-represented groups might face in terms of broader national and institutional structures and policies (such as funding and financial support) and other practical issues relating to infrastructure and mechanisms of support (such as the accessibility issues of higher education institutions or need for childcare provision).
