Introduction to the chapter

Students and practitioners of leadership operate from images they have of themselves and of one another. This includes images they have of collectivities, such as groups, teams, organizations, and entire societies. As with images they have of individual persons, which I addressed in the previous chapter, their images of collectivities are partial, misleading, and to some extent false. Also, the reality which an image is attempting to represent is changing all the time, so that people must periodically update their images just to stay current.
