Don’t mollycoddle them

I bet there are some kids in your child’s class who are almost never there. Especially in the winter. They’re always off school for coughs or colds or imaginary allergies,* being wrapped in cotton wool by their parents. And when they are at school, they’re off games or swimming because they’ve got a bad finger or they felt a bit sick yesterday morning. I went to school with someone who stayed at home whenever his hay fever got bad. Missed masses of important lessons, and his friends got used to hanging out without him all summer so he didn’t fit back in come the autumn. And what was the point? He had a huge garden at home – his hay fever must have been worse than if he’d come to school with its tarmac and paved ...
