Actors have a love/hate relationship with commercials. They want to do them because the money is good but they don’t understand the complexities of the form. Commercial acting is a very specialized type of acting.

Actors of every type and stripe have performed in commercials. Bryan Cranston recently said in an interview that commercial residuals kept him afloat for nearly ten years while he was waiting for his career to take off. Dustin Hoffman, Jodie Foster, and Hilary Swank made commercials long before winning their Academy Awards. Robert Duvall performed in commercials both before and after winning his Academy Award.
